The 77th Annual Association Championship attracted a good representation of Defending Champions from previous years. Congratulations to all participants of the Event which ran over the weekend 17th and 18th August. The weather was fine. We only had the use of just 4 courts on the afternoon of the 1st Day because of the Junior Competition in the morning. In spite of the limitations, the scheduled matches were completed on the first day before 5.00pm. On the 2nd Day we were fortunate to have 6 courts for use except that players featured in more than two events made proceedings a tricky task to put on. The last two deciding matches finally completed under lights at 7.08pm. All in all it was an exhausting weekend both for players and volunteers. Notable amongst the volunteers were Jasmine and Vicky who helped the desk and help encouraging players to participate.
Of interest were participants who entered the event for the very first time.
Leo Wang deservedly won the Open Men’s Singles, Doris Teoh remained unchallenged in the Ladies’ Open and with Dennis Teoh, retained their Open Mixed Doubles title. Doris Teoh together with Ariel Chen took the Open Ladies Doubles. Calista Tjoputra took out the Junior Girls from Manuja Khatri. Owan Ratsoongneon won the Veteran Men’s Singles and together with Dennis Teoh, won the Veteran Men’s Doubles. The new comer ChengLian Shan took out the Veteran Men’s Singles 65+ from John Grass, while Peggy Zou won the Veteran Ladies’ Singles from Jean Kwong.
Amongst the new faces featured this year, undoubtedly the most outstanding is young Jeffrey Chen. Playing with a full load of matches, he managed to return a Runner-up in the Open Men’s Singles, won the Junior Boy’s Singles from Justin Ho and won the B Mixed Doubles with Julia Tan, another outstanding junior.
The Presentation of the awards on our next Family Day on 8th September at Meadowbank Tennis Complex. The Family day will begin at 9.00 am with Round Robin matches, raffles, coaching, possible racquet demonstration by Wilson and support from our outstanding sponsor, Tennis Ranch. Members and new members welcome. The Presentation will commence after lunch at 2.00pm.
