We are a non-profit organisation. Our main goal is to promote the game of tennis to the Chinese Australian community.
The Association had its origin in 1936 when the first Chinese
tourament was initiated by Bill Lowe to promote competitive tennis
among players from the five Chinese Clubs. These were:
|
The Chinese Lawn Tennis Club ( Moore Park )
The Ying Wah Club ( Kensington )
The C.A.P.T Club ( Kingsford )
The Royalyn Club ( Maroubra )
The Wimbledon Club ( Paddington )

The
formation of the Association, its affiliation with N.S.W Tennis
Association, the tournament being held at White City, the publication
of draws and results with the newspapers, and even the organisation
of the Association's first Annual Ball at Hordern Bros. were credited
to Ernest Yum.
Ernest was a competent tennis player, a good golfer and played
first grade cricket for Petersham. He excelled in baseball captaining
N.S.W in the Claxton Shield and Australia in a series against
the American Team. Born in 1910 in Marrickville, he was
fine scholar at Fort Street School and topped the state in his
final accounting examination. Very popular and well respected
by his colleagues as well as the commercial community Ernest was
a godsent to the Chinese tennis community.
The first tournament held in March 1936 over four Sundays was
won by Reg Long (singles),
Ted and Maurice Kee Chong (doubles). The tournament grew dramatically
in subsequent years when more events were added and in 1948 over
100 player from every state in Australia competed. Looking back
over these years the Association has been one of the better and
influential organisation in the Chinese community and offered
the opportunity for our people to meet.
Today the Association is still actively involved in tennis and
other social activities. The main event of the Association is
the Annual Tennis Championship held during the Easter long weekend.
Throughout the year other tennis and social events such as interstate
and inter club tennis challenges, charity tournament, ten pin bowls, and golf day are
held. Social tennis are organised on Sundays at Scott's Reserve,
corner of Wyralla and Midson Roads, Epping. Visitors and players
of all grades are most welcome.
